What to Know About Millennials

The Millennials are a generation that have never existed without the internet.  For their entire lives, the answers to almost every question have been accessible through the click of a button or a quick browser search.  This generation is different than any other generation not just because of their birth years (1980 - 2000’s), but because of their increasing desire to connect.

As the Millennials claim their place in the business world and look for ways to continue to innovate, they have challenged companies to create an atmosphere that will intrigue the Millennial to come and work for them.

LinkedIn released information revolving around the data of Millennials learned behavior in an effort to help businesses better reach this specific audience. By studying the make-up of accounts,  LinkedIn found that there are 87 million users categorized as Millennials, making up 38% of LinkedIn’s user base. It appears that the rest of LinkedIn’s user base is interested in reaching this sectional as well because the word “Millennial” has been searched more than 16 million times in LinkedIn’s search engine, and more than 43 thousand articles have been written on the generation.

It isn’t surprising that companies are trying so hard to reach the Millennial demographic. LinkedIn found that they make up for more than $1 trillion of the purchasing power annually, and has estimated that more than 6.4 billion devices will be connected by the end of this year. This allows for greater opportunities to influence and be influenced by the tech-savvy, career driven generation.

Because LinkedIn focuses on making connections and networking for careers, much of their information involved data involving that. It was found that Millennials are a very large and diverse group with professions ranging from Salesperson, to Software Developer, to Marketing Specialist, but most have the same values when looking for a career: advancement opportunities, better pay, and challenging work.

With this information in mind, companies can better adjust to the new generation that is taking the world by storm. Whether they are recruiting Millennials for hire, or discovering what will create the most engagement, businesses will have an easier way to meet the expectations Millennials have created.
