3 of the Most Common LinkedIn Marketing Mistakes - And How to Fix Them

Are you making these common mistakes with your LinkedIn content? If so, here are some tips that will improve your LinkedIn content approach. 

 

1. You “highjack” your own post

This is when you start your post with an interesting topic and suddenly shift topics at the end. You write an update that initially grabs the attention of your network, only for them to discover at the end,  your main goal is to sell something, and not really discuss what you started. 

 

How to fix it: 

With each of your LinkedIn updates, remember to stick with one main topic. If needed, you can split one update into two, each with a clear focus. This can help you be more strategic with your posts, including tagging relevant people, posting at ideal times, using engaging hashtags, etc. For each post, be sure the images you use support the main topics. If it doesn’t, people might view your picture as “bait”, which will get you noticed but won’t build your network. 

 

2. You post on LinkedIn only to promote your self-interest

You’ve probably accomplished quite a few things you’d like to show off on your LinkedIn page. You should! However, if all your activity on LinkedIn includes promoting yourself, you probably won’t maximize your reach and engagement potential on this platform. The best way to leverage your page is to build relationships - and you can’t do that if every post is about your achievements. 

 

How to fix it: 

Think more about how you can give rather than take. Finding various ways to help others succeed on this platform will help you reach your LinkedIn goals faster than you would through self-promotion. You’ll see real results from organic engagement and add value to your network. The results are relative to what you put in. 

 

3. You don’t have a LinkedIn content strategy

If you’d like to create opportunities for yourself, such as advancing your career or growing your business, you need a strategy that is aligned with your overall marketing goals. 

 

How to fix it: 

If you don’t have a strategy, think about these four questions:

  • What is your goal for using LinkedIn?

  • Who is your target audience?

  • What value can you add to the community?

  • How will you measure your success?
