Back to Basics: How to Edit Social Media Posts After They've Been Published

It can be really easy to make mistakes when it comes to posting on social media.

In this article, we’ll review how to edit social media posts after they’ve been published.

An idea worth noting: the ability to edit a post after it’s been published isn’t available on all platforms, and there are limits on what you can and cannot edit.

Here are some editing capabilities on some of the main social platforms:

Facebook

On Facebook you can edit captions, but you don’t have the option to change images or videos.

Edits on Facebook are visible and can be made at any time by anyone who has been listed as a Page admin. The history of a post’s edits are available to the public, so followers and page visitors will be able to view them.

Here’s how to actually edit a post on Facebook: click on the three dots in the top right of the post window, and click the label ‘Edit Post.’ Once you’ve made your changes, click ‘Save.’

Extra tip: If you need to edit on the go, you can do so through Facebook’s Page Manager app.

Instagram

On Instagram you can’t switch an image or video after you post. However you can edit the caption, add or change your location, and add or delete accounts tagged. Currently, you only have the ability to edit Instagram captions in the app on your mobile device.

Here’s how you edit your Instagram post:

  1. Go to your post

  2. Tap the three dots in the top right corner of your post

  3. Click the ‘Edit’ button

  4. Choose to edit your caption, add or change location, and add or delete accounts tagged

  5. Click ‘Done’ in the upper right hand side

Pinterest

On Pinterest, the photo or video you have published can’t be swapped out, but what you can edit are your Pin’s board, section, title, description and link your pin connects to. You also have the option to edit on the go via the Pinterest app.

Here’s how to edit your Pinterest pin:

  1. Choose the pin you want to edit

  2. Tap the pencil icon in the left-hand corner of your pin

  3. Edit the sections you’d like to change

  4. Click ‘Save’

It’s important to get familiar with the editing capabilities of the social media networks you utilize so that if any mistakes occur, you know how to fix them. With this knowledge you’ll be able to quickly and easily edit your posts, while maintaining a professional looking feed.
