Turns out it is short for quick bites, reflecting the type of entertainment that will be available starting April of 2020. 

Quibi is jumping on the 2020 trend of the rising popularity of videos. They define themselves as an upcoming American short-form mobile video platform. Quibi aims to be the first app to actually make short-form TV and movies into a lasting medium on your phone. Steven Spielberg himself announced that he was on board to produce and write a series. Big-name producers and established celebrities won’t be the only ones you’ll find on Quibi. Quibi has reached out to a number of social media influencers.

For influencers, this is great news as they can use this platform to promote their content. Influencers like Rachel Hollis, who has a 1.6 million following on Instagram has been signed a deal with Quibi who will stream “The Rachel Hollis Show,” a daily show of bite-size bits of motivation for young mothers. Other influencers like Shan Boodram who have a smaller following of 260,000 also signed on with Quibi. Other popular influencers you will see on Quibi are Willam Belli, who will be the host of a fashion show called “Fashion’s a Drag.” Brittany Luse and Eric Eddings will create a version of their popular podcast, “The Nod”.

This new streaming app is believed to be a big competitor for Netflix, Hulu, Disney+ and Apple TV. Quibi offers two tiers of pricing, the cheapest beating any other preexisting streaming service at $4.99 + ads The more expensive option sits at $7.99 with no ads. As of right now, the plans for Quibi are entirely mobile, meaning you’ll have access on your phone and tablet only.

The whole purpose behind these easy digestible series is to bring to life this idea of “new TV” where we can fit this form of entertainment into any part of our day. Trends seem to be straying away from long hours of binge watching entire episodes. Millennials in 2020 are on the go and Quibi is ready to be the streaming service for them.
